Typography and editorial design
I don't want to spend too much time sharing with you about my fascination with Typography, because most of you are probably reading this blog entry because of the type related keywords. If you are a beginner in design I believe typography is a great place to start. If you've been around, this is an interesting area to perfect and be creative.
I have a nice class on this subject at my University. My editorial design Professor, Lee Byungju is know in South Korea for his unique teaching methods and he has given me quite a few valuable advices and also a good book to read on the subject. This subject helps me a lot when it comes to web design. Back a few years there really wasn't such thing as web typography. Websites were ugly. Today type is important if you want to stay in the picture, today it is a subject that gets a lot of diggs.
If I had to be born a few decades ago, I would have probably been a typographer - a man who draws type, maybe at a small book publishing company where I could also enjoy reading a lot.
Type is nice for a few reasons. First of all text is the easiest way to communicate information. Text is everywhere, hence the popular phrase "type is everywhere" coined by typographers. Another reason is the power which lies in the typography of a paragraph to create an impression and atmosphere in the reader's mind - good stuff.
When I began as a young web designer I could not understand why some websites, although simpler and less graphical, made better impression than the once done by amateurs such as me. My first hint came from one of my friends, a musical director, who told me that the difference between a cheap and a professional musical lies in the small details. I reasoned that this might be a hint to why some of the websites look more professional than the other. At some point I have discovered this fascinating world that I really hope for you to discover as well if you haven't yet.
There is so much you can do with text, it's pretty engaging! Some of the readers are probably going through this post thinking "yeah, tell us something we don't know". For such, I'll have more stuff coming soon.
Have a nice day, God bless all the readers of my blog.
